I've been trying to brew an entry about my newest quasi-obsession "Heroes," but after finishing Season 1 last night and feeling pretty non-plussed, I just wanted to express my kinda weird growing crush on the show's serial killing villian, Zachary Quinto. I guess it's weird because he's a scary character? Or is it weird because of those eyebrows? I dunno, but again, I am disproven of my supposed attraction to oddballs (though Quinto plays an oddball who gains confidence, ie, murderous appetite, via the stealing of others' powers, I'm not entirely convinced that a man this hot could possibly be such a social pariah) by this man who is most definitely in most hetero network-TV-watchin' women's top ten.
About the show, I will say this: it's not perfect, but it's good. I was excited to see each subsequent episode enough to finish the DVD set. And although I won't be actively pursuing the procurement of Season 2, I am looking forward to continuing the story. But the show does a lot of storytelling bullshit. Not the whole "good thing it was just a dream" exactly, but devices like guns being pointed and not fired already! Characters having to be repeatedly convinced that they have a destiny when they were the ones that originally proclaimed this to the non-believer who is now reminding them. Pretty actors who annoy the crap outta me. And "Save The Cheerleader, Save The World?" Is this the writers' idea of a cryptic message? At least the cheerleader, who is arguably one of the best things about the show, was worth it. I suppose these elements are not that annoying when I take into account that I am talking about network TV here. I just felt the constant riding-the-brakes of cheap suspense when I wanted the writers to trust themselves more and just KILL some (more?) people and see where the story goes. One of the things that makes the Simpsons so brilliant is because the writers so obviously take a huge toke and then just write start-to-finish and let the story guide them. Again, I'm talking about network TV. And The Simpsons, though technically in that category, doesn't count.
I guess I need to be a little more forgiving. Not everything can be Battlestar.
