Early To Bed, Early To Rise...

I woke up at 5am this morning to write. After hosting the Word Ninjas open mic last night and knowing I had to finish a story to perform at Allegra's mom's birthday party for tonight, I did not have the wherewithal (or sobriety as the crowd last night will attest*) to sit in front of my computer at 11pm. So I set my alarm early, actually got up (only one snooze!), showered, made coffee & toast, and sat down at my computer to write (okay, and mess around on Facebook, of course). And it felt great. I love waking up in the early morning, like 4 or 5am and getting going before the rest of the world. That is my "go" time. The only problem is getting enough sleep when you're part of the young performance crowd that likes to run around late at night? Of course I want to say screw the crowd, I want to write. How can one survive on 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night? Secrets, anyone?

* (For example, when plugging the Women's World Championship Slam on Jan. 27th at Kieran's Irish Pub, I asked Slam Mistress Allison if "World" meant women actually from throughout the world or if it was just the USA, like the "World" Series. She said there will be women from Europe and Canada. And I was all, in earnest, "Oh yeah, Europe, I guess that counts as the world. Well, like World War II when it was just Europe and... oh, I guess that was the world." That got a very huge laugh.)
